2020 Birth Statistics

2020 Birth Statistics

What a year to be a midwife!

Words cannot express how incredibly proud I am of every single person behind these numbers. Behind these statistics are families who were confident in their decision to birth at home even before conception. Others, when their support team was stripped from them in their plans to birth at the hospital, jumped into homebirth with two feet, some with only weeks remaining in their pregnancies!

Some of the stats I found most interesting this year:

If I only count the babies born at home, all but 1 were born in the water! 95%! (Water birth is not an option at the hospital) While I have no preference as to where your baby is born - that’s completely your decision - I’m frequently asked if I’m comfortable with waterbirth. The numbers don’t lie haha!

It’s totally possible to labor and birth without a single vaginal exam! Almost half of the birthing women I served this year did just that! It’s very common for the first time I ever touch your vagina to be after you have asked to check for any lacerations after birth!

Which numbers surprise you most? What statistics are you interested in seeing?
